Interview with The Designer: TV Unit 01

Introducing the latest addition to our living room furniture collection: the TV Unit 01. Acting as an anchor to any living room, combining a focal point with functionality (and keeping your Netflix game strong), the TV unit is an integral part of any living room. To find out more, we caught up with Swyft designer, Beck, to get the scoop on her thoughts, findings, and inspiration behind the TV Unit 01.
What were your biggest challenges when designing TV Unit 01?
One of the biggest challenges was getting the hole for the cables right. Each factory interpreted where to put the hole differently, so we’d get one at the top, at the bottom, to the sides. It was also our first time using glass, so we were learning about new standards as well with this one – making sure the glass was sturdy enough for every day use and packaged correctly as to not cause any health and safety issues.
Talk us through your thought process behind the mid-century design
The mid-century design works really well with the Swyft sofa collection. It’s the aesthetic we’ve chosen for a lot of our sofas so it only feels right to have pieces in the furniture collection that complement the sofas within the same room.
What is your favour TV Unit 01 colourway?
For me, I’m a really big lover of oak. I think it suits a lot of homes and it really suits my home, too. Though, I do love the blue – it’s a really stunning colour, but you can’t go wrong with a bit of oak. It’s timeless.
How do you find the perfect balance between aesthetic appeal and functionality when designing something like the TV Unit 01?
We’ll check things in our homes – measure the games console and check the sizes of things that you’d traditionally put inside of a TV unit. So, once we know that these things will fit, we’ll start working on proportions and then the design.
Any more furniture plans for the future?
You could say that we have some more mid-century pieces in the works at the moment. Keep your eyes peeled, because they’re not just going to be for the living room anymore. We’re going to be expanding across the house.
What’s your favourite TV show at the moment?
At the moment, it would be the new season of Black Mirror. I’ve really enjoyed that one. And Severance is really cool.
